Honda RA273 of 1966, Watkins Glen.
These two photos were taken by S.
Jerry Moore (United States) and were kindly supplied by Barton Brown. They are
reproduced with permission, for which I am most grateful. (BK)
I love old photos showing people doing
things...it's intriguing to look at. This was obviously a cold day, going by the
clothing being worn.
The gentleman wearing the glasses is Mauro Forghieri, Ferrari Team Manager at the
time. He, and the chap in the dark jacket and cap to the left (Luigi Bazzi,
Ferrari engineer) appear to be keenly interested in the Honda as it is pushed
into position against the pit wall by the Japanese crew. Is it that V12 that is
the object of their curiosity?
The photographer to Forghieri's left is also interested in the car, yet the other
chap standing on the pit counter is obviously keener on snapping something
further down.....Francois Hardy, maybe?!. And what of the lady in the headscarf
and jacket? Is this Eva Marie Saint looking for JP Sarti? More likely a lady
friend (or wife?) of either Richie Ginther or Ronnie Bucknum looking for a warming cup of coffee!(Anyone
know who it is?)
Pristine racing thoroughbred? Not likely!
Get a load of the unpainted exhaust system and the crude welding in
the middle of the crankcase stiffening web. No...this was a working car, not a
museum exhibit!
There is some lovely detail here for the modeller.......note the little pulley
that guides the throttle cable on it's journey forward.
(Incidentally, nineteen cars started, Ginther finished in 8th. place and Bucknum 10th. and last)
